First Chair

I have been away from Oak Harbor since 1973 although the memory of Mr. Konopik still is vivid. Military life often made me feel apart from whatever school I landed in. Oak Harbor Junior High was another one except in band. Mr. Konopik patiently waited for me to get a clarinet while testing me on instruments like the baritone. Finally I presented my $25 clarinet from the pawn shop to Mr. Konopik. He played the badly in need of refurbishing instrument and told me to get another. Shortly after, I brought him my brand new $150 Sears clarinet and he was pleased. I challenged other clarinet players until I was first chair. Mr. Konopik would have me play "G" to tune the band. I still have the wood clarinet and have found memories thanks to Mr. Konopik and his patience for perfection. God Bless his family. I am sincerely sorry and know Mr. Konopik is missed.
