Obituary for Lorraine Allison Maier

Lorraine Allison (Kay) Maier (born October 4, 1928) left this mortal world on Thursday, August 25th at 6:13 PM for the experiences that await in the next adventure. Born to William T. and Irene (Shipman) Kay and raised in Los Angeles, California, Lorraine went on to attend UCLA where she met a handsome GI freshly discharged from service. WWII veteran Robert Maier successfully courted and married Lorraine on August 28th, 1949. The couple lived in Santa Monica prior to buying a house in Manhattan Beach.
Six children soon followed: Michael, Claire, Teresa, Jim, Phil and Mary. Lorraine postponed her education while raising the kids, but later returned to UCLA to obtain her Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology.
A professional mom, Lorraine cared deeply for her children. She loved a good joke and to sing silly songs. She was supportive of all her babies.
Lorraine was an animal lover and cared for many pets over the years. She also had a strong fondness for sailing and golf. She learned to sail when a young girl, and together, Lorraine and Bob bought a series of sailboats, on which they enjoyed many memorable trips with their children.
A talented artist, Lorraine enjoyed painting in oils and watercolors as well as drawing in charcoal and pastels. She also had a penchant for music and played viola, mandolin, piano and marimba.
Lorraine lived in such varied towns as Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach, Berkeley, Redondo Beach, Maui and Oak Harbor.. Most recently, Lorraine lived on a small farm in Freeland, WA on Whidbey Island, with her husband of sixty years, Robert Oscar Maier, Ed.D., and her daughter and caregiver, Mary. And, much to her own amusement, cats, dogs, chickens, ducks, geese and horses.
Lorraine patiently faced the considerable challenges of living and coping with Parkinson’s Disease for many years. She later additionally was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Her passing was due to a worsening of the heart disease. Her family would like to suggest memorial offerings in lieu of flowers be sent to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (or any reputable Parkinson’s research foundation) and/or the American Heart Association.
Rest in peace, Lorraine, we miss you very, very much. Mom no ka oi. Aloha.
