Kenneth Sterling "Ken"  Jensen
KENNETH STERLING JENSEN
Kenneth Sterling Jensen, age 93, passed away in Coupeville on Thursday, January 14, 2010.
Ken was born on August 31, 1916, in Seattle, to Laurits and Margarethe Jensen. He moved with his family to a Clover Valley farm in Oak Harbor in 1919. He graduated from Oak Harbor High School in 1934.
In 1937, Ken married Grace Nienhuis. Grace died in 1962.
In 1964 he married Alice Case Lang. Alice died in 2005.
Ken had a variety of jobs, including mechanic at Fakkema Motors from 1937-1942. He then served as a hospital corpsman in the Marines from 1943-44. From 1945-56 he owned and operated Ken’s Grocery. From 1956-64 he worked at the Anacortes Veneer and finished his working career as a co-owner of Bayshore Furniture from 1966-76.
Ken was very active in the Oak Harbor community. He served as the President of the Rotary Club and of the Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the City Council, Navy League Board of Directors, Island County Board of Equalization and the Island County Housing Authority Board.
He was a longtime member of the Oak Harbor First United Methodist Church.
Ken is survived by two sons, Arnie (Milly) Jensen, Don (Jan) Jensen and one daughter Marlene (Jeff) Mahan; five grandchildren: Todd (Sarah) Jensen, Erika (Greg) Dennis, Joshua Roaldson, Lucas (Jill) Roaldson and Megan Jensen. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren: Nickolas, Cameron, Olivia and Macy. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Brett A. Jensen.
Kenneth is survived by two brothers, Ray (Alice Dee) Jensen and Elmer (Anna Bell) Jensen, and one sister, Dorothy Cunningham. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry (Ruth) and Stan (Louise), and by one sister, Anne (Roy Pittman).
Ken was a kind, devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He maintained his sense of humor, positive attitude and sharp mind to the very end. Ken made a lasting and memorable impact on everyone he met.
The family wishes to thank the staffs of Island Hospital, Careage of Whidbey and Regency on Whidbey.
A Memorial Service will be held at Oak Harbor First United Methodist Church on Saturday, January 23, 2010, at 10:00 AM, Pastor David Lura officiating. Committal services will be private at Maple Leaf Cemetery. Donations can be made to the Brett A. Jensen Memorial Scholarship Fund at Frontier Bank, Attn: Melissa, P.O. Box 1390, Everett, WA 98206.
