Aunt Hazel

My first memories of Aunt Hazel are going to visit the family when they lived in Dickenson, ND. Mom and Dad would pack us kids into the back of the car, usually still in our PJ's, sometimes before dawn, to visit Aunt Hazel, Uncle Rodney and the kids. They lived near the railroad and had a giant pump house. It had a bathroom that we were allowed to use. I remembered being scared to go in there alone because it had, what I thought, were monster ants. It was the first of many times I remember having Uncle Rodney’s baked beans. They were so yummy! Aunt Hazel, from what I recall, always had a piano in her home, and I was so mesmerized when she played. In 2006, Lois and I drove to Great Falls to pick up Mom and Aunt Hazel to bring them to Grants Pass. We took our time, with the two of them in the back seat chatting and laughing as they talked of childhood memories. It was fun with two sets of sisters, taking in the scenery, and stopping to peer into old abandoned houses and churches. You will be missed, Aunt Hazel. Arleen Smith
