Our family met the Fikse family back in 1954 and they were our neighbors.
Gerald Fikse always liked a good joke. This event happened when I was in high school about 1956 and my folks and brother had just returned to the house. Hanging over our garage door was a dead mud hen duck.Immediately we started thinking of who would have hung that duck over our garage door. It didn't take long to think of another Oak Harbor High School classmate, Jerry Smith, who was a duck hunter and he lived up the street from us. I took the dead duck down and walked up the street and quietly deposited the duck over the front door of Jerry's house. A little time passed and the duck was back over our garage door. I again found time to get it back up the Jerry's house. That duck set a record for most miles flown after being shot.
The person enjoying all the travels of this duck was Gerald Fikse who had hung the duck up in the first place and watched smiling from his house at the adventures of his dead duck. We had a good laugh together when he finaly admitted he had hung the duck up.
Gerald and Janet Fikse were close life time friends and will be missed.
