Obituary

Robert Bernard
August 14, 1938 - March 27, 2020

Bob Bernard passed away on Friday, March 27 in Bellingham, Washington. He was born on August 14,1938 in Twin Falls, Idaho to Alene Seal and Claude Bernard. Bob and his wife Kay met as students at the University of Idaho. In February of this year they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

In 1960, Bob and Kay moved to Portland, Oregon, where he began a 30 year career with First Interstate Bank of Oregon. Working at branches in Medford, North Bend, Woodburn, Ashland, and Corvallis, Bob showed outstanding leadership and achievement in civic affairs. His service on boards included the Oregon Shakespearean Festival, Rogue Valley Medical Center Board, Rotary chamber boards and a variety of other organizations. Recognition of his community service included Ashland’s Distinguished Service Award and the First Interstate Ralph J. Voss Civic Leadership Award.

Bob enjoyed creative projects. Landscaping and designing two houses in Ashland and one after retirement in Bend, were completed with his wife Kay and a team of architects and builders. Bob liked to cook and the family remembers his amazing sautéed mushrooms with steaks, omelettes, and green chile stew. Bob was passionate about wine and chocolate and will be remembered for his favorite late evening line, “Does anyone want port and chocolate?”

Bob loved people and adventure. He took outdoor adventure seriously before it was popular. Early family life included an ever changing collection of bicycles. In the 1970’s, the entire family did a week long bike and camping adventure along the Oregon Coast. They also enjoyed downhill skiing and often took trips to Mt. Bachelor in Bend, Oregon. Bob enjoyed golfing and socializing throughout his life but especially in his retirement years at Awbrey Glen Golf Club. In retirement, Bob added kayaks to his growing outdoor sports collection.

Bob Bernard is survived by his wife Kay, brother John, son Jeff Bernard and daughter-in-law, Tasleem. Daughter Julie Bennett and son-in-law Tom and two grandsons, Grant and Blair Bennett.
