Special Memory of Dr. Becky: One Year Has Passed

It has been a year since we lost Dr. Becky and we wanted to express our most heartfelt condolences to Dr. Robert, her entire family, and her friends. We are so sorry for your loss and we are comforted only by knowing that she is no longer in the severe pain she suffered from. I wanted to express my deep gratitude for the compassionate way she cared for our lab, Bear, who is still here with us, now at the age of 10, largely because of her quick and decisive action the day I took him in in December of 2010. He had a really severe GI upset but was trying to be stoic about it. Becky sat on the floor with Bear and whispered in his ear, gently stroking his back, then explained to me how she knew he was nauseated. A quick x-ray determined that he has a solid object in his stomach and she arranged for an internal medicine vet to visit the clinic to perform an endoscopic exam. He arrived on the 5:30 ferry that evening, and Becky and he performed his procedure that night. She was late getting home, and talked me into going home to bed. I didn't know what was wrong, or if he would live through the night. I spent the night with my partner verging on despair. Early the next morning the phone rang, and Becky's voice said, "We have a lab here who would like for you to come get him....he's not real happy with the accommodations." She and the internist had determined he had inflammatory bowel disease and while the other doc was more pessimistic, Becky was upbeat and hopeful and by the time I arrived to escort him home, she' d written up a treatment plan with a new diet and ideas for how I could make treats that would't hurt him. Her plan was so successful that he's had some of the very best health and good times of his life over the past two years. Her compassion, knowledge and skills, in addition to her clear and quick decision making saved him and he is with us here tonight as we remember Becky with love and gratitude. Dr. Becky and I had something in common, aside from our desire to help my beloved Lab, and we recognized it in each other on a day I'll never forget. We both suffered from severe pain, though from different medical conditions, and we shared some stories, and tried to encourage one another, during our all too short years of knowing one another. Bear had been trained as my service dog when I was first diagnosed and I knew that she not only had compassion for him, but for me and my partner as well. To say that we miss her is an understatement but I do have some understanding of the overwhelming nature of her pain. We hope that Dr. Robert and other members of her family and her friends find some measure of comfort in knowing what an extraordinary and special veterinarian and human being she was. We hold the memories dear. And our hearts go out to you on this first anniversary of her passing. MK Sandford and Eileen Jackson
