Obituary for Phillip Clarence Ayers

Phillip Clarence Ayers
Phil Ayers (76) finished his earthly journey on May 30, 2016 and is in heaven with his Lord. He
passed away following a brief stay at Shoreline Health and Rehabilitation Center in Shoreline,
Washington.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Amy, brother Brian and his wife Ann, sister in law, brother in
law and their families and numerous nieces and nephews. Phil always spoke about how his
friends and family had enriched his life and how they had all given him the gift of time and love.
Phil was born to Norris and Mary Ayers in Indianapolis, Indiana on November 8, 1939. He grew
up in Vancouver Washington. After high school he entered the Air Force where he served in
Japan from 1957-1960. He continued his love relationship with his JAPANESE friends until the
time of his death. Following his time in the Air Force he attended Clark College in Vancouver
and the University of Washington where he majored in Far Eastern Studies. It was at the
University of Washington where he met his wife Amy and convinced her to marry him in June of
1967. Following their marriage they lived in Kirkland, Washington until 1978. They then moved
to Whidbey Island where they have been longtime community members. Phil was active at
Trinity Lutheran Church in Freeland, Washington.
One of Phil's passions in life was his love of animals. If you saw Phil around Whidbey Island it
would most likely be at Greenbank Farm, Rhody Park and the beaches of Whidbey Island with
his dogs. He also would be seen at the Cloverpatch café reading a book, most likely a P.G.
Wodehouse book. He served as President of the International Wodehouse Society.
Phil's most ardent desire was to be of service to others. He accomplished this by spending time
and doing errands for those who were in need of help. It was this purpose which brought him
the greatest joy.
Above all, his strong faith in God inspired us all to seek the high ground of God's unique
purpose for each of our lives.
A celebration of his life will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Freeland, Washington on
Thursday, June 9, 2016 at 1:00 PM. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions
may be made to Good Cheer Food Bank, Langley WA, WAIF Coupeville, WA and Trinity
Lutheran Church Freeland, WA.
