CHARLES EDWARD “CHUCK” ARNOLD
Charles Edward “Chuck” Arnold, age 94, lifelong area resident, passed away on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at Regency on Whidbey Harbor Care.
Mr. Arnold was born in San de Fuca on February 20, 1916 to Frederick and Dorothea (Grasser) Arnold. “Chuck” attended the old San de Fuca schoolhouse, where he graduated from eighth grade. He then attended and graduated from Coupeville High School, where he played football for four years. Chuck was active as a Coupeville School Board member in the late 1950’s. He was a member of the San de Fuca Volunteer Fire Department for sixteen years. He also served as one of the original members of the Board of Directors of the Island Savings and Loan, serving for over thirty years in that position. In addition, Chuck served as an original board member for the Island County Cemetery District #2 (Sunnyside Cemetery) from 1965 to 2000.
Chuck married Viola Sloth on November 22, 1941, and the couple raised a family at the farm on Arnold Road where Chuck had grown up as a boy. In all, he resided there for a total of eighty-nine years, prior to moving to Regency on Whidbey Retirement Community. Chuck demonstrated his generous spirit by raising chickens and a garden to give away eggs and vegetables. He also raised cattle, hogs, sheep, grain, squash and cabbage as a livelihood.
Viola passed away on February 9, 1976. Chuck later married Constance “Connie” (Keester) Lang on January 20, 1977. Connie preceded Chuck in death on May 25, 2006. He was also preceded in death by his sister Evelyn Martha Arnold in July 1930 and by his daughter Valerie Evelyn Arnold on December 18, 2005. He is survived by his son, Fred C. Arnold (Darlene) of Ferndale; two grandchildren, Derek Arnold of Coupeville and B.J. Arnold (Sarah) of Lynden; three great-granddaughters, Alexis, Kayla and Addison Arnold; step-daughter Diana Dunn (Pat) of Anacortes; two step-grandchildren, Tasha Repp (Cody) of Bellingham and Skye Dunn (Shannon) of Oak Harbor; also, numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Chuck also leaves his close friend, Marylouise Vracin of Oak Harbor. A Memorial Service is set for Saturday, August 14, 2010, at 1:30 p.m., at Sunnyside Cemetery, near the Block House, reception immediately following. Interment will be private. Memorials may be made to a charity of choice. Family and friends are encouraged to leave their condolences and share their memories at the online guest register at www.whidbeymemorial.com.
