Obituary for Kathryn Ann VanWinkle
Kathryn Van Winkle
September 17, 1940 – June 6, 2021
Kathryn Ann Hughes Van Winkle was called home and reunited with her husband Patrick on June 6, 2021 at the age of 80 years. She passed on peacefully at home under Hospice care, surrounded by her three children.
Kathryn was born September 17, 1940 in Hillsboro Oregon, the daughter of Wilbur W. Hughes and Rhea L. Gregg. She grew up in towns near Portland and graduated high school in 1958 from David Douglas High School in Portland.
While living in Portland, she met Patrick and they were soon married in Chicago in 1959. Shortly after the wedding, they were transferred to the West Coast and finally made their home in Wenatchee. It was there that they raised their three children Marilyn, James and Gail. With Patrick’s retirement in 1987, they returned to the family farm in Walla Walla. While he farmed, she was the Chief Financial Officer for the Department of Human Services of Walla Walla County. There she made a good friend Margaret Schacht and during their friendship, they enjoyed travelling many places together.
After 51 years of marriage, Patrick passed away in 2011 and she moved to Coupeville to be near one of her children. Her son-in-law Dan built the house of her dreams that included a quilting room. Her passion of quilting inspired her to sew many quilts for family and friends. She also was an active member of the Coupeville United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women’s Group.
She is survived by daughter Marilyn and spouse Daniel Miranda of Coupeville, son James and spouse Leah Van Winkle of Portland, daughter Gail and spouse Benjamin Kroll of West Richland, brothers Gregg Weston and Phillip Russell, sister Margaret Russell. Eight grandchildren Ian and spouse Hannah, Nevin, and Kelsey Miranda; Julia and Lydia Van Winkle; Kaylee and Taylor Kroll. Great grandchildren Camden and Arya Miranda. She was preceded in death by husband Patrick, her parents and brother Allen Hughes.
A graveside service will be held on June 12, 2021 at 3 PM at the Weston Cemetery in Oregon.
