Obituary for Josephina Mata "Josie" Sanford

Josefina Mata Sanford
10/7/1944 – 9/17/2021

Josefina Mata Sanford, age 76, passed away peacefully September 17th, 2021. She was born October 7th, 1944, in El Paso, Texas to Basillio and Teresa Mata. She married her friend and love, Paul Tyler Sanford, in September of 1980 who preceded her in death on September 24th, 2020.

Josie grew up in El Paso with her siblings, Alice, and Charlie, where she was known to have a pet frog. After spending some time in California, she then moved to Lakewood, WA where she met her future husband, Paul Sanford.

For many years Josie worked at a nursing home in Anacortes, where she cared for many souls during her time there. After some time, she then worked at the Civil Service Commissary where she dedicated over 20 years of her life. She and Paul moved to Oak Harbor, where they built their dream home in Elenem Acres.

Josie is survived by her siblings, Alice, and Charlie; her four children, David, Lorenzo, Julie, and Margarita; her six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. All of whom she loved and cherished deeply.

During her residence at her Elenem Acres home, she thoroughly enjoyed gardening in her green room and raising birds for over 10 years. She treasured her time with her grandchildren, dogs and walking along the beach with her husband. She cherished family get-togethers and loved holidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Her Christmas village was the envy of many, and she loved putting it together. When driving in the car, Motown would be a common theme during any car ride.

She will undoubtedly be missed by all those she leaves behind and all those whose lives she touched.
