Obituary for Hugh McElroy Chalfant Sr.
Hugh M. Chalfant Sr. was born 07/13/1924 to Frank Sr. and Katherine Chalfant. He graduated from Boise high school in 1942. At the age of 18, he was one of two people selected from the state of Idaho to work for the FBI as a junior clerk, working out of the Washington D.C. FBI building. After one year with the FBI, he came home and enlisted with the Navy Officers Training Program, where he graduated as a Navy Supply Corp ensign. He was assigned to a destroyer then VJ day stopped the war.
Hugh Sr. Graduated from the University of Washington and from the first year of the Harvard Graduate School of Business. He met his wife of 75 years, Ruth Wallace, at the University of Washington. They were married in Seattle in 1947.
Hugh Sr. Started his long career (39 years) with the Bon Marche in Lewiston Idaho in 1947. He had stops along the way in Pendleton and Seattle, before he became the store manager of the Bellingham Bon Marche, in 1959. He managed the Bellingham store for 25 years and retired in 1984.
Hugh Sr. And his wife Ruth moved to Bainbridge Island for 24 years, where they lived on beautiful Rockaway Beach. During these years, Hugh sr. And Ruth camped their way across the United States in their van. They also participated in numerous elder hostel trips to various exciting destinations. They moved back to Bellingham in 2007 to be closer to their family.
Hugh Sr. Was an avid hunter, fisherman, gardener, rv traveler, rockhound and billiard player. He was known for winning numerous trap shooting and billiard tournaments. He was so good at billiards that none of his sons wanted to play him. He loved to hunt and fish and always said that he would rather hunt and fish than eat. He was a member of Birchwood Presbyterian Church, where he faithfully served on the Session numerous times.
Hugh Sr. and Ruth were married 74 years and had a wonderful life together. He loved his family very much. Hugh Sr. Is survived by his wife Ruth of Bellingham, son Hugh M. Chalfant Jr. (Kris) son Scott w. Chalfant (Gayle Ann) and son Bob Chalfant (Catherine) 5 grandchildren: Karey Jones (Keith) Jeff Chalfant (Michelle) Matthew Chalfant (Lucy) Jordan Chalfant (Lauren) Ashley Dixon (Ben) and 11 great grandchildren: Jacob, Molly, Daniel, Sophie, Luke, Nathan, Emily, Roland, Ivy, Harper and Jace.
Hugh Sr. Requested that there be no special services on his behalf. There will be a private family gathering.
