Obituary for Gertrude Evelyn Van Dyke (Eskes)

Gertrude VanDyke

On November 2, 1933, William and Gertrude Eskes welcomed their first daughter, Gertrude (Trudy) while living in Snohomish, Washington. Her family included two older brothers, Richard, and William and later a sister Joan, all who have preceded her in death. On October 8, Trudy entered her much awaited heavenly home.

The Eskes family moved from Snohomish to Everett where Trudy graduated from high school. Following high school graduation, Trudy worked in a retail setting. May 21, 1952, was the beginning of a 67-year marriage with Duane Van Dyke and the adventure grew with the addition of four children, Jan, Larry, Sandy, and Jim. The family continued to grow and eventually included eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Many family vacations were spent camping; sometimes exploring the United States and other times just playing and fishing. As empty nesters, Duane and Trudy enjoyed travels in Europe and several cruises.

Trudy’s workspace was the source of interesting and creative projects. Giving back to others was important to Trudy and until her last days, there was always some kind of sewing project. She lost count of how many quilts she had created and donated to Bargains Thrift Store for resale.

Duane and Trudy downsized in 2006 and moved to Heather Village in Mt. Vernon. The Village provided a friendly environment to live out her retirement years.

A memorial service was held on October 24 at 10:00 AM at the Mount Vernon Christian Reformed Church.

In lieu of flowers, the Van Dyke family would appreciate donations to either the Oak Harbor Christian School or the Mt. Vernon Christian School.
