Obituary for Betty June Vance

Betty June Vance was born at the Monkey Hill Road family farm on June 24, 1933. She was the last of eight children born to John (Jan) Lam and Josephine (Joukje) Reinstra Lam. June passed away on October 5, 2021 at Providence Hospital in Everett surrounded by her loving family.

June graduated from Oak Harbor High School in 1952. She was an avid supporter of high school and amateur athletics. June and several of her friends helped start the Women’s softball league in Oak Harbor. She played for many many years before finally retiring at 54 years old. June enjoyed all sports but especially golf, fishing, softball, hunting, and bowling. Our adventurous Mom even Bungee jumped off the Original Bungee Bridge in New Zealand in her late 50’s.

In July of 1952 June married the love of her life John A Vance (Jack) in Oak Harbor. They welcomed four children into their lives; Debra Snowden (Joseph) born in Fort Ord, CA, Loree Shimada (George Albright) born in Oak Harbor, WA, John (Michelle Chamberlain) born in Kodiak, AK, William (Terri Achley) born in Fort Ord, CA.

In 1962 they all moved back to Oak Harbor after Jack got permanent orders to NAS Whidbey. They resided in Oak Harbor for the next 60 plus years. During that time they enjoyed many vacations around the US and world as well as many hunting and fishing trips. June enjoyed taking care of her many garden areas around her house and camping areas.

In 2018 Jack Vance, her husband of 66 adventure filled years, preceded her in death. June is survived by her four children, 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She leaves behind a host of friends to whom she was a fun loving friend and neighbor. We will all miss her very much.

A Memorial Service was held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 201 N.E. Oleary Street in Oak Harbor on Tuesday October 12 at 11:00.
